The AfterSchool@1st program started in the fall of 2007 with 14 students from the 5th and 6th grades at Case Avenue Elementary School (Sharon City School District). Today, the program has about 20 children, including some 7th graders who have returned to peer mentor the new 5th and 6th graders!

Adult mentors from our congregation meet the children at the church after school. They share a snack, help them with homework, and play games in the gym. Each week a speaker comes to discuss issues such as confidence building, stress, decision making, or bullying. Occasional field trips have included roller skating, snow tubing, and a ropes course. Before the children leave at 6pm, everyone eats dinner together.

The program runs every Thursday for 8 weeks in the fall and another 8 weeks in the spring.
